Hydrodynamics

Hydrodynamics - The prediction of ship performance.

Seaspeed has been running CFD and other simulation packages alongside its model test programmes for a number of years and due to the excellent validation of the software, provides a full CFD hull assessment service, covering drag, trim, sinkage, dynamic and directional stability, spray and aeration, manoeuvring, wake and wash, powering efficiencies and appendage flow, aerodynamic interaction and superstructure aerodynamic turbulence modelling.

Other simulation software provides vessel mooring analysis (vessel motions and forces on mooring ropes, fenders and bollards), vessel Dynamic Positioning analysis in wind, wave and current (with propellers and rudders, waterjets, bow and stern thrusters), including time domain simulations (Level 3 DP). Typical projects cover:
  • Ship resistance and detailed powering calculations
  • Propeller and hull efficiency factors
  • Spray and aeration modelling
  • Wash and wake surveys
  • Shallow water effects
  • Manoeuvring and dynamic stability
  • Mooring analysis in waves
  • Dynamic Positioning analysis in wind, waves and current
  • Offshore structure/wave interactions
  • CTV / SOV transfer performance to floating offshore structures
